Definitions & Terms Used in Online Marketplace Listings

Some terms often found in online marketplace listings as they are used by Pepper Pearl LLC.

New: brand new or never used, usually with original packaging or tags and all accessories it originally sold with unless otherwise noted

Pre-Owned: also called Estate, previously owned by a consumer, can be used or new.

Used: previously used

Dead Stock: never used and in original packaging, left over stock that was never sold to a consumer.

Old Stock: never used with original packaging or tags, originally placed for sale years or decades ago, but never sold to a consumer.

Mint Condition: Never used, in perfect condition, and in the original packaging.

Near-Mint Condition: (also, near new or like new) appears new, may or may not have the original packaging, packaging may have minor shelf wear.

Excellent Used Condition: no damage, scratches, dents, fading, or stains other than slight wear
Very Good Used Condition: no damage or stains, but shows some normal wear
Good Used Condition: shows wear, obviously used, may have minor damage or discoloration but is still useful.

Fair Condition: Needs repair or refurbishment, shows wear, and may have cosmetic damage.
Poor Condition: Obvious major flaws, may have parts or pieces missing, would require major restoration or repurposing.

As-Is:  has flaws, usually indicates that item is not returnable.

Bare: item only, no box or accessories

Antiquity: an item that is very old (from 1,000 A.D. or earlier)

Antique: item is at least 100 years old

Vintage: also called a “Period Piece”, 20-99 years old; date, decade or era is usually listed; can be retro or repro

Collectible: traditionally something inherently valuable or worth more than originally sold for; however, has come to mean anything people collect, but is usually considered valuable, whether sentimentally or monetarily

Retro: nostalgic; an item that imitates trends, modes, or fashions of the recent past; a reproduction of classic style; can be new or used

Repro: reproduction; an imitation of an antique or collectible item; there is no such thing as an “authentic reproduction”

Authentic: Something that is real as opposed to something that is a fake, a copy, or a reproduction.

Original: the first one—an un-modified item; not a copy, reproduction, or derivative; there is no such thing as an “original copy”

Provenance: (antiques) the origin, history or “life story” of an item—who owned it; when, where and by whom it was created, etc.

Vermeil: sterling gilt (gold-plated sterling silver)

Lithograph: art print created using a printing method where an image is drawn on lithographic limestone or a metal plate with a grained surface using oil-based inks then printed on a flat surface; a separate stone or plate is used for each color in the image.

Serigraph: a high-quality printing method using silkscreen; a mesh fabric is used to transfer ink onto an underlying material.

Upcycle: to repurpose or recycle while elevating above the item’s original quality, status, or purpose
